According to previous reports from Eduardo Burgos, a reporter from Spain's Assas and the British Media Telegraph, Alonso joined Real Madrid almost for free, and the team did not pay the termination fee because of Alonso.

Telegraph previously stated that Leverkusen has agreed to terminate the contract with Alonso one year ahead of schedule, and Alonso joins Real Madrid as a free agent. Real Madrid did not pay the penalty for liquidated damages.
