Trading Whitmore Rockets creates a trading exception

2:42am, 7 July 2025【Basketball】

The Houston Rockets traded Cam Whitmore to the Washington Wizards, and in return, the Rockets will receive two second-round draft picks.

Subsequently, Houston reporter David Weiner tweeted, updating the Rockets' salary space after the trade:

teams will have a salary of $1.53 million below the No. 1 Rich Line (hard salary cap). If Jonathan Williams is cut, it will be $3.8 million below the hard hat.

By trading Whitmore, the team should be able to create a $3.54 million trade special.

Trading Special (TPE) is a mechanism in a labor-management negotiation agreement that allows teams to earn more than players who are traded through a specific restriction. This exception helps the team deal with the salary cap problem when trading, especially if the team has already exceeded the salary cap.
