Thunder star Alexander thinks he can one day surpass Kobe Bryant

According to US sports media F/W analyst Chaitanya Dadwal, Thunder star Alexander feels he can surpass Kobe Bryant one day.

The current NBA reigning MVP and Finals MVP Alexander recently accepted an interview with "GQ", and they discussed in depth his life, basketball career and future ambitions. During a tour of his house, the NBA champion displayed his NBA basketball Mount Rushmore mural, which features Kobe, Jordan, James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He revealed that his ultimate goal is to prove that he belongs among the players on that mural.

"I picked up basketball to be the best. If you ask me if I want to be better than Kobe, of course I do," Alexander said. "Whether I get there or not, we'll find out." Earlier this summer, Alexander claimed he was the best basketball player in the world right now. They say to be the best, you need to beat the best. Therefore, to achieve the goals he has set for himself in his career, he needs to surpass the benchmarks set before him by his own childhood heroes and the greatest players of all time.

So when an athlete like him is asked if he believes he can be better than a legend like Kobe, it seems to me that he has no choice but to say yes. This is what Alexander did in this situation. However, he's about four championships away from approaching Kobe Bryant in terms of accomplishments. Additionally, there's the question of his impact on his playing days, a far cry from Alexander's impact on the lives of multiple generations of players with the Mamba mentality. So while Alexander is not wrong in aiming so high, it is premature for him to insert himself into the discussion. But in my opinion, if Kobe was alive today, he would respect Alexander for aiming for such a high standard as himself.

Just last year, Alexander became the scoring leader, regular season MVP, NBA championship, and finals MVP in the same season. This is an achievement that only three legendary players before him could accomplish: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jordan and O'Neal. In 99 games throughout the season (76 regular season games and 23 playoff games), he averaged 32 points, 6.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 50.6% from the field. After such a strong season, he must believe he can do it again with the Thunder.

"That's what it's about: How dominant can you be in your time?" he said in an interview with GQ. "Winning in a row certainly speaks to that dominance. We definitely have the talent, the personnel, the chemistry and the experience to repeat. But a lot of things have to fall into place between now and the end of June 2026." So Alexander will likely look to capitalize on the Thunder's momentum and build on such a solid season. Entering the 2025-26 season, they will be looking to emulate the 2018 Warriors' run to back-to-back championships.
