The second round pick is ahead! McBride s moment of breaking out of the cocoon!
5:48pm, 11 June 2025【Basketball】
Myers McBride, a name that Knicks fans must know, has been away from being unpopular from the second round position, and has walked from Wuming to the main team, and has walked out of his own NBA path.
On September 8, Millennium, McBride was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. The city is most famous for baseball. Its urban history has produced hundreds of baseball players, such as famous baseball players Peter Rose, Barry Larkin, and David Parker. In contrast, although Cincinnati has also cultivated many NBA players, the popularity of basketball is completely different from baseball, and there are no well-known basketball players in recent years. But this did not affect McBride's childhood love for basketball. His father was a player who played for the NCAA, his mother was a tennis player, and his brother even started playing basketball since he was a child and also played for the German third-tier team. McBride was born into such a sports family.
Under the influence of his eyes, McBride loved sports very much. He attended Moller High School in high school. At that time, he was already a double-player basketball player. He played the lead guard in basketball and served as a quarterback in football. Compared to basketball, he also has a pretty good talent in football, and even attracted the attention of the University of Cincinnati rugby team. In the basketball team, McBride also has an alumnus who is currently an NBA player, Lakers center Jaxson Hayes. The two have played side by side at Merler High School for four years.
In the second year of high school, McBride averaged 10.2 points, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals, ranking second and third in the league in steals and assists, with a shooting percentage of 56.5% fourth in the shooting percentage list. That year, Merler High School lost by 1 point in the first-class state league championship game and ranked second. Although he missed the championship, it was already an excellent experience for McBride.
However, it was unexpectedly sudden. A football game in his senior year caused McBride to seriously injured his left foot. He was originally expected to be directly reimbursed for the season. Fortunately, Merler High School teammates worked hard enough to pass the hurdles and enter the semi-finals, which allowed McBride to play in his only two games in his senior year. And the two games were successfully won, and McBride was able to win the Ohio Division 1 Basketball League championship with the team that year.
In the last year of high school, McBride averaged 13.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. Merler High School has not lost in 29 games, completing the single-season winning record that Ohio State has been away for more than 20 years since 1995. They also successfully completed two consecutive state championships.
After graduating from high school, McBride began to receive many invitations from NCAA teams. In the end, he chose to join the prestigious West Virginia University. The Bulls' defensive champion Jevin Carter also came from the school. In addition, there is an NBA legendary alumnus in the history of the school: Jerry West.
On November 8, 2019, McBride ushered in his first official game in his college career, scoring 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists against Akron University. By rookie standards, this is already a pretty good performance. McBride was almost always on bench players, but he has always been highly valued by the head coach. Finally, he ended his first season in college with 9.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals, and was selected as the All-Rookie Team.
After entering the sophomore season, McBride's performance was even better, averaging 15.9 points, 4.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. He also made his personal representative work with 29 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds against Kansas on February 6. West Virginia University successfully entered the NCAA Championship that was three years away, and McBride was also selected for the second team of the league's All-Team.
NCAA Championship faced Moheide State University in the first round, McBride scored a career high of 30 points, added 6 rebounds and 8 assists, leading the team to a 84-67 victory. Unfortunately, he lost to Syracuse University 72-75 in the second round, ending his first and last NCAA Championship journey in his career. In April of the same year, McBride announced that he would join the NBA draft and retain his college qualifications. After several thoughts, he decided to choose to participate in the 2021 NBA draft and give up his college qualifications.
Although he played quite comprehensively in his sophomore season, many scouts believed that McBride did not reach the NBA level at that time, especially as a point guard, he lacked some control and organizational skills. Even though he had excellent defensive concepts and skills, his physical talent still made him have to spend more energy than others to stand firm in the league. This is also a key reason why he was not favored at the beginning of the draft.
Finally, McBride was selected by the Thunder with the 36th pick in the second round, but was soon traded to the Knicks. The signing was completed in August of the same year, and McBride officially entered the professional arena.
McBride first made his debut in the summer league, averaging 15.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game, and performed very well. On October 22, 2021, McBride logged into the NBA for the first time, but only played for 2 minutes and 40 seconds on the spot, writing down the monotonous data of 0 shots of 0 shots, 0 scored and 1 blocked shot.
Next, McBride began a day without any games, wandering back and forth between the Development League and the NBA many times. Only in the game against the Rockets in December, because the team's main player Ross was injured and retreated, McBride had the opportunity to play for 35 minutes, made 6 of 11 shots in the game, scored 15 points, and added 9 assists and 4 steals. Although it was not a top performance, it at least proved that he had the ability to gain a foothold in the NBA arena..
Then even though the Knicks officially announced that Ross could not return to the team in a short period of time, McBride still did not get more opportunities. In the end, the average playing time of the whole season was only 9.8 minutes, and he only scored 2.2 points and had a terrible shooting percentage of 29.6%. Even thinking that the Knicks and the playoffs are getting farther and farther away in the second half of the season, head coach Thibodeau began to increase the playing time for young players, and McBride, who was rookie season, may have fewer opportunities.
In the 2022-23 season, the Knicks welcomed Brunson to join. With the team's original Rose and Fornier, the back line began to be crowded. Thinking of Thibodeau's famous conservative employment, it has been continuously compressed to McBride's chance to play. Even though the number of games increased from 40 games in the rookie season to 64 games, his playing time was still only 11.9 minutes. Fortunately, his shooting percentage reached 35.8% that season. Although the guards still did not pass the performance, especially in the three-point shooting percentage, it was even more dismal 29.6%.
Faced with the sluggishness of the previous two seasons, most young players basically began to complain, but McBride chose to practice hard. When his teammates returned home to rest after the game, they still chose to stay and strengthen their training and seize every opportunity to play. All of this was gradually seen by head coach Thibodeau.
2023-24 season was the year when McBride broke through. His average playing time reached nearly 20 minutes. His total appearances in the season reached 1,328 minutes, which was more than the 1,132 minutes in the previous two years. He played more than 40 minutes in a single game. He even played for 48 minutes in the game against the Nets on March 23, 2024. He also played 26 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
The playing time has increased, and all data has also doubled. The personal data has reached 8.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists. The previously criticized shooting percentage has also reached 45.2%, and the three-point shooting percentage is 41.0% above the qualified level, and the improvement is far beyond the previous two years.
Thanks to progress, McBride welcomed good news at the last moment of 2023. As the team's main players Barrett and Quickley were traded, the team was vacant. The Knicks signed a three-year, 13 million long contract with McBride in December. In addition to providing guarantees for McBride's career, this also represents the team's affirmation of his efforts.
Led by two major stars Brunson and Randall, the Knicks ranked second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 50 wins and 32 losses. The last time they scored 50 wins in a single season was already 11 years ago.
Although McBride had a playoff record the previous year, he was a supporting role most of the time, with only 5 minutes at most in 8 games, and even in many games less than a minute. In total, he only scored 1 three-pointer and basically had no sense of existence.
But in this season, McBride began to differently. In the first round of the 76ers, McBride played for 28 minutes, made 7 of 12 shots, made 5 of 7 three-pointers, and efficiently scored 21 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. In the end, the Knicks successfully defeated their opponent with a 7-point advantage.
In the end, the Knicks defeated the 76ers 4-2 in the first round. Unfortunately, they were eliminated after seven battles against the Pacers in the second round. They stopped in the semi-finals of the playoffs for two consecutive years. In the 13 playoffs of that year, McBride played, with an average of 26.7 minutes, and was able to score 11 points/2.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists, playing the role of the team's sixth man.
Thanks to his outstanding performance last season, after entering the 2024-25 season, McBride began to usher in more opportunities. He scored 26 minutes in the first game of the regular season against the defending Celtics. He was so hot that he made 8 of 10 shots in the whole game, made 4 of 5 three-pointers, scored 22 points and 2 assists. Unfortunately, the Knicks lost the score.
Although this is the case, it can be seen that McBride was much better than before.
But unfortunately, McBride missed five games during the period due to a thigh tendon strain at the end of 2024. In these five games, the Knicks can only win against the Jazz and Raptors who are in extremely poor form. Although the game samples are not large, it is enough to show his importance to the team.
Before being injured, McBride played a total of 25 games. Although he played as a substitute, his average of 24.5 minutes per game was the highest playing time in his four years in his career. All the data have improved significantly, reaching 9.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists, gradually becoming the team's stable sixth man role.
After the entire regular season, McBride played 64 games, with a career-high 24.9 minutes, his personal data reached 9.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1 steal, and all four basic data reached the career-highest.
played 18 games with the team in the playoffs, and their average playing time dropped to 18.9 minutes compared to last season's 26.7 minutes, and their personal data also declined. They averaged 5.8 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. In the end, the team still failed to break through the East and was defeated by the Pacers in the division final.
To a certain extent, the Knicks' exit was also related to the team's conservative rotation, and after being eliminated in the season, Thibodeau was also fired by the team. As the Eastern Conference powerhouse in recent years, it is a bit of a pity to be eliminated early in the playoffs one after another. It is intended to hope that there will be more opportunities next season, and this is also McBride's chance next season.
