FIBA Killing God! Schroder has become a popular candidate in the Hall of Fame. He is only short of Olympic medals until he is successful.
3:26pm, 16 September 2025【Basketball】
In the final of the 2025 Men's Basketball European Championship, Germany was suppressed by Turkey most of the time. As the German leader, Dennis Schroeder's performance was a bit tepid. Without Schroder's aggressive scoring output, Germany lost its first eight devastating attacks.
But in the end, less than 4 minutes, Schroeder awakened and used a series of key performances to push German basketball to the top of Europe.
Bonga and Tees made two three-pointers to overtake the score from Schroder's breakout after entering the hinterland and reasonable passes after the pick-and-roll reading game. One minute and 15 seconds before the end of the game, Germany failed to execute the tactical strategy, Schroeder took the lead and used his rapid breakthrough to break into the basket to complete a high-blocking throw from his left hand, and Germany overtook again. After that, Schroeder never gave Türkiye another chance. He made a small and big emergency stop and two free throws. Schroeder helped Germany secure the victory and also secured the championship.
32 years later, Germany once again stood at the top of Europe, and Schroeder, who was selected into the best team of the tournament and won the MVP, was undoubtedly the biggest contributor. The World Cup + European Championship double champion, fourth in the Olympics, German basketball entered the golden age, and Schroder was the undisputed creator.
Nasmith Basketball Hall of Fame + FIBA Hall of Fame? Even though Schroeder did not win many hard honors in the NBA, he still had great hope of being selected for the Double Hall of Fame after he retired.
Schroeder is an alien in a white country like Germany. Schroeder's father was a German basketball player. He met Schroeder's mother when he went to play in Gambia in 1990. Later, Schroeder's mother immigrated to Germany. Schroeder was born in Germany in 1993 and his black skin caused him a lot of trouble.
There is no racism in the pure world of young children, but the curious children are puzzled by Schroeder's skin color. They would ask Schroeder “Why is your skin dark” or “Are you dirty”?
When Schroeder grew older and expanded his cognitive cognition, he began to realize that the "childish words" surrounding him in the past had become "racism". He once said that "he had experienced a lot of racial discrimination in childhood", and those aggressive words and deeds hurt Schroeder.
The open-air court in Princes Park of Brunswick became Schroeder's refuge. In 2004, 11-year-old Schroder was discovered by basketball coach Carlin while playing jungle ball. Carlin thought Schroder had good ball control skills and invited him to try. Schroeder impressed the Brunswick Phantoms with his outstanding performance and entered the echelon, officially starting his career in professional basketball.
When Schroeder gradually became famous on the basketball court, he scored from the second team to the first team in just one year and was selected for the German youth team. His living environment in Germany improved a lot. Schroeder admitted that basketball changed his destiny: "When I started playing, people began to respect and accept me as a black man because I contributed to Germany and my hometown of Brunswick." In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Schroeder, who was only 14 years old, sat in front of the TV and witnessed the sacred scene of Nowitzki attending the opening ceremony as the flagbearer of the German delegation. The seeds of dreams are quietly sown, and Schroeder longs to become the German Olympic flag bearer one day. In 2014, Schroeder played for the German adult national team for the first time. He spent 11 years realizing his dream, and he achieved achievements far beyond Nowitzki in the international arena.
In the 2015 European Championship, Germany was in the handover period of the leader's scepter. It was the last competition of Nowitzki's national team's career and it was also the first competition Schroeder participated in in the adult national team. Schroeder averaged 21 points and 6 assists per game, with the highest score in the team. Nowitzki averaged 13.8 points per game. Other positions in Germany were weak and no one scored in double digits. He lost 1 win and 4 losses in the group stage, and finally ranked 18th.
After Nowitzki withdrew from the national team, Schroeder officially became the leader of Germany. In the 2017 European Championship, Schroeder averaged 23.7 points and 5.6 assists per game, which was their first entry into the top 8 in Europe since 2007. In the quarterfinals, facing France, which has many NBA players including Dior, Schroeder scored 21 points, 8 assists and led the team to win by 3 points.
The success of the 2017 European Championship made Germany full of expectations for the 2019 Men's Basketball World Cup, but they unexpectedly lost to Dominicans in the group stage and failed to qualify, and finally ranked only 18th.
After the 2019 Men's Basketball World Cup, Germany followed the example of the American Dream Team and formulated a three-year plan, emphasizing the stability of the core team, requiring that the competition must not be absent without special circumstances, and make progress and deepen chemical reactions together. This plan has excellent results. In addition, after Nowitzki withdrew from the national team, the only two reliable players in Germany were Schroeder and Theis. However, after the 2019 World Cup, Germany ushered in a talent boom, and players such as Wagner Brothers, marksman Obst, and Banga grew up. In the 2022 European Championships, Schroeder averaged 22.1 points and 7.3 assists per game to lead the team to win the bronze medal, and was selected for the best team. In the 2023 World Cup, Germany, which was the elite, won the championship under Schroder, made history. Schroder averaged 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game and was selected into the All-NBA team and won the MVP. Five players in the team averaged double-digit points per game.
"For the past three years, we have proved to the world that German basketball is already the top in the world," Schroeder said proudly, and when he returned to his hometown of Brunswick, he was invited to the town hall and received cheers from thousands of Brunswick citizens on his balcony. When Schroeder held the World Cup trophy to thank the fans, he was greeted with the warmest applause and the recognition Schroeder valued the most.
City recognition, and a higher level is national recognition. Schroeder dreamed of becoming the Olympic flag bearer like Nowitzky, and in his eyes, "there is no more noble honor." Schroeder brings Germany to the 2024 Paris Olympics and realizes his dream of becoming the flag bearer of the German delegation.
"When I was a kid, people told me that I could not do this and I could not enter the NBA, but I proved with practical actions that as long as you work hard and love it enough, your dreams can be realized," Schroeder said.
Schroeder became the flag bearer and has another meaning: "The important message I carry this flag to German society is that blacks can also carry the flag of the country. Whether you are white, black or other skin color, whether you are Asian or Turkish, as long as you put in your efforts and enthusiasm, you can achieve success."
Schroeder failed to play in the Tokyo Olympics due to insurance issues. There is nothing that can stop him from playing in the Olympics in the 2024 Paris Olympics. As the captain, he averaged 17.2 points and 7.5 assists per game and was selected into the best team. Germany lost to host France by 4 points in the semi-finals, lost to the powerful Serbia in the bronze medal battle and missed the medal, but the top four were already Germany's best record in the Olympics.
From 2017 to 2025, Schroeder and Germany achieved the following results:
No. 6th place in the 2017 European Championships, entering the top 8 in Europe for the first time in 10 years;
No. 3rd place in the 2022 European Championships, Schroeder was selected as the best team;
No. 4th place in the 2024 Olympics, Schroeder was selected as the best team;
No. 2025 European Championships, Schroeder was selected as the MVP and selected as the best team.
Schroeder, like Patty Mills and other players, cannot play the core in the NBA, but he is a god-killing existence on the FIBA stage. Many people are curious why this situation occurs. Schroeder once interpreted the difference between the NBA and the FIBA. He believes that it has nothing to do with the differences in rules and roles. The reason is very simple:
"There are many self-centered players in the NBA, and everyone values personal performance. But no one in the national team cares how many points they score, and everyone is more willing to sacrifice and put victory in their personal data. In the national team, I can directly point out the problems of my teammates, but in the NBA I have to use words with caution because many players are too sensitive."
With their outstanding performance in the FIBA field, Schroeder saw hope of being inducted into the double Hall of Fame.
FIBA Hall of Fame, as the name suggests, is to reward players and coaches who have achieved outstanding achievements in the FIBA arena. With Schroeder's hard honor, there is no suspense for him to be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in the future.
Simply looking at Schroeder's data and honors in the NBA, it is difficult for him to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. But the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame not only rewards outstanding NBA players, it also has an international player nomination committee, who are responsible for selecting and nominating players with outstanding performance in international arenas. In the history of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, legends such as Divac and Matthew Leonis have not achieved brilliant results in the NBA, but are still inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame (and the FIBA Hall of Fame) for their outstanding international performance. By this standard, Schroeder has a great hope of being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
Another data list: In history, six people have had World Cup and European Championship MVPs at the same time, namely Belov, Dalipagic, Petrovic, Kukochi, Nowitzki and Gran Gasol, all of whom were inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Among them, Belov and Dalipagic have not even played in the NBA.
Don't forget, Schroeder is only 32 years old. He once boldly said that he would play for Germany until he was 40 years old. If he had no injuries, he would definitely play in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. If Germany wins the cards at the Olympics, Schroeder will be inducted into the double Hall of Fame without any obstacles.
Before the start of this European Championship, Schroeder said in an exclusive interview with frustration: "In this country, I will never get the same love as Nowitzki because of my dark skin."
Some deeply rooted concepts cannot be changed, at least Schroeder tried to change. He publishes children's books and encourages children who are racially discriminated against. He participated in public welfare projects and ranked third in the 2024 "BravoOtto" Social Welfare Award, which is intended to recognize public figures who advocate fairness, diversity, respect and inclusion. He advocates racial equality on every possible occasion.
Schroeder does not have to force himself to become Nowitzki. In the eyes of most pure basketball fans in Germany and even the world, Schroeder is already a national hero of Germany. He created the golden age of German basketball and left his own mark in history. His skin color will not have any impact on his legendary status.
From the interview after Schroder won the championship, he has already let it go:
"Everyone has his own story and legend. Nowitzki changed the way big players play. His extraordinary achievements in the NBA and FIBA are inspiring us to yearn for German basketball."
"And I am Dennis Schroder, and this is my own legend."
